The Lake District Fells are a major tourist attraction. The term 'fell'
was brought to England by Viking invaders and is close to modern
Norwegian "fjell" and Swedish "fjäll" meaning mountain. Altogether, Alfred Wainwright's seven beautifully produced pictorial ‘Guides to the
Lakeland Fells’ describe 214 mountains and tops. AW or 'Wainwright' as he liked to be called was born in Blackburn, Lancashire on 17th January 1907, and when still quite young began his lifetime love affair with maps. His passion for studying maps was soon fed into his obsession with the Lake District Fells, which he first visited in 1930.
Wainwright's magnificent 'guides' which he filled with meticulously drawn pen
and ink drawings were produced between 1952 and 1966.
Altogether, AW
wrote and illustraited 50 guidebooks and volumes before he died in
January 1991 at the age of 84. Each of the tops in his pictorial guides
is now known as a 'Wainright' and many walkers now try to climb them
all and tick them of as 'bagged.' Here is a list. The Western Fells are made up of 46 tops. The area is enclosed by the edge of the National Park from Egremont to Cockermouth to the North West, Lorton Vale, Crummock Water, Buttermere and Honister Pass to the North East, Sty Head Pass and Wasdale to the South East and an imaginary line from the Southern Tip of Wast Water to Egremont to the South West. The highest point is Great Gable. The Central Fells have 32 tops and are enclosed by Keswick to the North, Derwent Water and Borrowdale to the West, The Langdale Valley to the South and Thirlmere, Grasmere and Ambleside to the East. The highest point is 'High Raise' (Langdale). The Eastern Fells have 42 tops. The area is enclosed by Threlkeld and Pooley Bridge to the North, Grasmere and Thirlemere to the West, Ambleside to the South and the Kirkstone Pass and Ullswater to the East. 'Helvellyn' is the highest top. The Far Eastern Fells area has 47 tops and is enclosed by Ullswater to the North West, the Kirkstone Pass and Ambleside to the West and from Ambleside through to Troutbeck, Kentmere and Sadgill to the Eastern tip of Haweswater Reservoir and then North to Pooley Bridge. The highest top is 'High Street.' The Northern Fells boast 33 tops. The area is enclosed by Keswick and Threlkeld to the South, the River Derwent and Bassenthwaite Lake to the South West and the boundary of The Lake District National Park to the North and East. The highest point here is 'Skiddaw.' The North Western Fells have 40 tops and are enclosed by Basenthwaite to the North East, Keswick, Derwent Water and Borrowdale to the East, Seatoller and Honister Pass to the South, Buttermere, Crummock Water & Lorton Vale to the South West and Cockermouth and the boundary of the Lake District National Park to the West and North West. The highest point is 'Grasmoor.
Wainright's Book 7 covers the Western Fells, which have been claimed by
some to be the most striking in the Lake
District. England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike is found here. Now
crumbling, Scafell has a
boulder-ridden summit and utterly spectacular views. The Western Fells
contain 11 of the 28 National Nature
Reserves in Cumbria and the environment ranges from complete austerity
and hard rock to rich green valleys with masses of Lakes such as
Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater. The Southern Fells have 47 tops and are enclosed by Seatoller and the Langdale Valley to the North, Sty Head Pass, Wasdale Head and Wast Water to the North West and an imaginary line from the Southern Tip of Wast Water to Seathwaite (Duddon Valley), along the Walna Scar Road to Coniston Village and then North East to Ambleside. The highest point is Scafell Pike.
Highest Fells: The highest Lakeland peak at 3,210 feet is Scafell Pike, accessible
from Langdale, Borrowdale, Wasdales and Eskdale.
Scafell, at 3162 feet is lower than the Pike but a bit more of a
challenge in many ways. Helvellyn 3118 feet, is one of the most popular
fells. Skiddaw is 3053 feet, while
Great End is 2984 feet, Bowfell is 2960 feet and
Great gable is 2949 feet.
Pillar is 2927 feet,
Nethermost Pike 2920 feet and Catstycam 2917feet. Wainright Fells in the Lake District National Park in Alphabetical Order 1. Allen Crags: Height: 785m 2576ft (Southern Fells) 2.
