Hi-Wire

logo-af-noir-blanc-500If you've dreamed of the freedom experienced by an Orang Utan swinging across the treetops, or if you would like to emulate superheroes like Spiderman and Superman, then several of the Lake District's activity providers can offer you a safe share of high-wire or high-rope thrills. With expert tuition, you can literally run off a 70 metre cliff and safely swing down a wire at around 40mph. Cumbria’s gorges and quarries are laced with zip wires, including the UK’s largest and scariest. To see what's on offer, you can visit the high-wire adventure trail which stretches for a mile through Grizedale forest. It combines everything from rope bridges and Tarzan platforms to trapezes all with a high speed descent at the end. More information from Go-Ape and Waterpark

Fell Running
Fell running is one of Cumbria's oldest and most testing sports requiring a great deal of mental and physical fitness. The area hosts over 50 fell races a year plus traditional events for the whole community. There are also personal challenges such as the' Bob Graham Round,' which takes in 42 peaks in 24 hours. Many youngsters are taking part in this gruelling activity so the sport is still going from strength to strength. Remember conditions on the Fells can change swiftly so you must always take heed of personal safety. Follow the advice of experts about carrying spare clothes, emergency rations, map and compass etc. More information about Fell Running from the Fell Runners Association (FRA) and about local races and events in Cumbria on the web-site of the Cumberland Fell Runners Club (CFR).

Quad Biking & 4x4
Quad biking in Cumbria boasts several excellent courses, offering everything from Kiddies Quads to 450cc four-wheel drive machines capable of doing 50mph over any terrain. Full instruction and safety clothing is provided and you don't even need a driving licence. Put your skills to the challenge across country treks, slippery moorland, forest tracks and rocky river beds. And if you're really feeling adventurous have a go up some steep fellsides. But be prepared for mud galore! An off-road course in Cumbria is just the job for learning to handle a 4x4 like a Land Rover 110, a defender or a Vauxhall Frontera. CAT UK is based in the heart and hills of the Cumbrian Lake District, 8 miles from Bowness and Winderemere and set in the beautiful Bigland Hall Estate.

Tuition is on hand from RYA instructors who will equip you to handle fast two person dinghies, single handers and tradional keelboats suitable for families. For a real treat, you could indulge in a luxury evening cruise, dropping anchor in a secluded bay for a five course meal. For the experienced seafarers, Whitehaven Harbour offers excellent access and a wonderful base to explore the North Western Britsih Isles. More information from Derwent Water Marina or Windermere Lake Cruises.

Waterskiing
With boat speeds limited to 10mph, the emphasis has changed on Lake Windermere. However, it might be argued it's now even better suited to beginners seeking lower-level introduction to the sport. Low Wood Watersports Centre, with it's large lake frontage and extensive range of equipment, is a great location for getting out on the water. Besides waterskiing and wakeboarding, you can learn to sail, or to paddle a kayak or canoe. You could also hire a boat and explore the lake. All this is set in one of the country's most stunning locations, against an inspiring backdrop of the Lakeland fells.
