Orienteering & Ghyll Scrambling |
|
Orienteering is an increasing popular activity in Cumbria. It can involve climbing the course of a stream, traversing rocks, squeezing through narrow chasms and even jumping waterfalls. Some of the ghylls feed directly into the Lakes and Cumbria is a high energy venue hosting some of the best ghyll scrambling events in forests and open terrain. The activity is known by various different names: map racing, map hiking and 'cunning running.' Anyone can turn up and take part. It's basically a 'race with navigation' where you are supplied with a map and a course of control points. You can walk, jog or run depending on how seriously competitive you are. Trail Orienteering has been devised for the less able-bodied who are interested in orienteering activities. Licensed activity holders will supply gear such as helmet and protective clothing as well as full instruction on safe descents. They can also help you try out events such as Aquaseiling.
