Horseback is a great way to experience the unspoilt Lake District countryside. You could bring your own horse or choose one from a trekking centre. There's something on offer for every level and you could choose an afternoon's riding to try it out or a 6 day trail riding adventure if you're a bit more experienced. The bridleways offer truly spectacular riding, and you can explore quiet lanes, tracks and villages or tackle bigger rides such as 'Back o'Skiddaw.  Beginners are well advised to take it easy, but if you're experienced, you could spend up to 5 hours a day in the saddle.
