| Honister Slate Mine |
|
The last working slate mine in England. Take the miner's original route to work up and over Fleetwith PIke (2,126 feet high). On the way, you'll be able to appreciate amazing views right across Derwentwater to Keswick and Bassenthwaite. When you've finished, you can go to the other extreme with the fully guided mine tour, taking you deep underground. After that, you might want to browse the shop selling Buttermere and Westmorland green 'gold,' crafted into Honister roofing slate - once the main reason for the mine. You can also choose from a range of keepsakes. You're sure to be hungry after all that effort, so you might want to sample the quarrymen's hearty homemade meals, which you can eat in the renovated miners cottages or in the pretty cottage gardens stretching right down to the river. A variety of snacks, coffee, tea and cakes are all on offer to revive you. You and the kids will love it so bring them along to Honister Slate Mine for a great day out. It's amazing who you might bump into. Corrie's Liam and Maria were there in November filming an episode for the soap. |
