Cumberland Sausage
cumberland sausage400x300Arguably the most famous of the Lake District's meat products is the traditional Cumbrian sausage It's pretty easy to recognise because it is coiled rather than linked like other British sausages. It's sold by length or weight and is made from rough-cut pork. It has a high meat content, at least 85%, and is made with a blend of herbs, spices and seasonings. Most of the butchers producing authentic Cumbrian sausage have their own recipes, often dating back over a hundred years. The name  comes from the traditional Cumberland pig, now extinct. Nowadays, the sausage is made from other free-range rare breed pigs.

Thornby Moor Dairy

It's worth a holiday in the Lake District just to visit Thornby Moor Dairy, Crofton Farm near Thursby. Sample the amazing range of cheeses made by artisan cheesemakes who aim to preserve the rich heritage of cheesemaking in Cumbria.  A great favourite is the traditional, cloth bound Cumberland cheese, made to an old recipe. All cheeses are available direct from the dairy, or by mail order. Local shorthorn cows provide the milk for the unpasteurized cheese. Goats cheese is another of the products visitors can buy in the shop after seeing the cheese being made.  Wedding cake tiers made of cheese and decorated with fruit are becoming more popular for brides designing something a little bit different.

Farmers Markets
Farmers Markets provide an excellent way to meet producers face to face. There are even opportunities to try before you buy. A wide variety of fresh and organic products is available that would often be a struggle to find in a supermarket. Remember how carrots used to taste. Sharp and zingy. Visiting a local-produce market is a breathe of fresh air. The sooner you organise your break through LakeLets, the quicker you'll be enjoying food that tastes as it should. Over 100 busy market days are held countywide each year; find local meat, fish, dairy, pickles, preserves, bakery products, puddings and more. Made in Cumbria provides a calendar detailing when and where Farmers Markets are being held throughout Cumbria
