The Lake District offers a treasure trove of scenic delights, majestic mountains, lovely lakes, secluded beaches, hidden tarns and beautiful little villages. Altogether, there are 18 sparkling lakes, 217 magnificent mountains, 514 Fell tops, around 2000 tarns and pools of water and over 400 towns, villages and hamlets. However Cumbria's rugged terrain and variable weather should never be taken for granted and it's important you never take on more than you feel comfortable with. If you aim to undertake vigorous explorations talk to experts, particularly if you're in any doubt about your fitness or physical condition, also check out Cumbria's Mountain Rescue Team advice.
