Beer and Breweries
Beer from independent breweries scattered throughout the Lakes is never ever forgotten. There's a great range and some briliiant choices to be made. Magic! The Drunken Duck Inn - Barnsgate Brewery - lies in the very heart of the Lake District with breathtaking views of the surrounding fells. Perfectly situated within a few minutes drive of Tarn Hows, Coniston Old Man and the Langdale Pikes. Its location within 60 acres of private land on a crossroads high above Lake Windermere provides a stunning setting for this quite extraordinary Lakeland Inn . The Duck has been under the same family ownership since it was bought in April 1977. The present day Inn is an unstuffy mix of old and new, constantly evolving, but always sticking to the basic philosophy of offering good service, comfortable accommodation, excellent food, wine and beer in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

Beckstones Brewery - is a one man operation, started about 5 years ago by Dave Taylor, a local man, who had always loved his beer. His journey as a beer lover began as a young man, apprenticed as motor mechanic in Grizebeck. His boss took him to pubs but he was not allowed to drink anything stronger than mild, which is still his favourite beer style. This modern craft brewery is producing a fine  range of beers to suit all palates. Not widely available, they are to be sought when visiting by those not lucky enough to live in the vicinity. The brewery is set in a delightful corner of rural Cumbria in the part formerly known as Cumberland, wild, isolated, with superb scenery. The village, the Green, is about 4 miles from Millom, just below Black Combe. A climb to the top will be rewarded by spectacular views of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man, and a major thirst.

Bitter End Brewery and Pub can be found in Cockermouth, a beautiful Georgian market town and birthplace of William Wordsworth. Established in 1995, initially as a one barrel plant using whisky casks as fermenters, the Bitter End brewery was refurbished in 2004 and an American copper clad integrated brew plant installed. The whole brew process can be seen through a glazed partition in the pub. Brew days vary but are typically twice a week. Cockermouth Pride is always on the bar; other beers are brewed in rotation plus seasonal, charity and festival specials.
